An Edgewater water main break has led to traffic delays in the borough and left area residents in Edgewater and Fort Lee without running water.

Authorities started receiving reports shortly before midnight on Friday that a water main break under River Road near the intersection with Massa Lane.

“There was a piece of road that was lifting up due to water underneath,” said Edgewater police officer Gary Youmans. Local utility crews spent all of last night investigating and attempting to mitigate the water main, Youmans said.

The crew is working around the clock and officials were not able to give an estimate on when repairs would be complete.

The road had to be closed due to safety concerns for motorists and residents, while workers from Suez Water attempted to mitigate the issue. The road closure has caused back-ups for parts of Fort Lee, including Hudson Terrace southbound and Main Street eastbound.

About 100 area residents between Main Street in Fort Lee and Burdette Court in Edgewater have been left without water since last night, said Suez spokesperson Treva Spencer.

Suez Water spent the night locating and isolated the main, Spencer added, digging up the street to work on the underground pipes. Suez had to coordinate with PSEG to temporarily shut off water while crews attempt to mitigate the break.

The crews will have to work on the valves and 12-inch water main under River Road, which they will either repair or replace so that water can flow freely through the pipe.
