A new musical about Bobby Darin transforms Circle in the Square into a nightclub
The 126 bus fills up fast on a Saturday evening. Commuters lean into their phones, checking schedules. But tonight, for a growing number of Hoboken residents, that bus isn’t headed to a midtown office. It’s headed to the theater.
That trip is getting easier — and the destination is turning heads. ‘Just in Time,’ a new Broadway musical about singer Bobby Darin, has taken over the Circle in the Square Theatre at 235 West 50th Street. And for Hoboken, it’s more than a show. It’s a reminder that Manhattan’s theater district is just a bus ride away.
The musical follows Darin’s life from his childhood in the Bronx to his rise as a global sensation in the late 1950s and 1960s. You might know his hits — “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover.” But the show goes deeper. It explores his intense ambition, his complicated family history, and his lifelong battle with a serious heart condition.
It’s also a love story. The musical highlights Darin’s relationships with two famous women: singer Connie Francis (a New Jersey native, by the way) and actress Sandra Dee.
Currently starring Jeremy Jordan (of ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Newsies’) as Bobby Darin and Olivia Holt (from the Disney Channel series ‘Kickin’ It’), the show feels more like an event than a typical Broadway production. The entire theater is transformed into a nightclub. The stage is a thrust — meaning the audience sits on three sides of it. Some lucky viewers even sit at cabaret tables on the stage itself, surrounded by the action.
“The whole venue becomes part of the story,” one audience member said. “You’re not just watching a show. You’re inside it.”
The cast delivers strong performances, sharp choreography, and some moments where the crowd gets to participate. It’s a tribute that respects both the glossy highlights and the painful family traumas that shaped Darin’s career.
For Hoboken residents, the logistics are simple. The 126 bus from Hoboken drops you at Port Authority. From there, it’s about a ten-minute walk to Circle in the Square. No driving, no parking. The show is on sale through Sunday, October 18th, so there’s time to plan a night out.
“An underrated perk of living in Hoboken is how easy it is to get to Broadway,” said a spokesperson for the show. “The 126 bus makes it seamless.”
Tickets are available online, and you can follow the show on Instagram at @justintimebway for previews and behind-the-scenes looks.
This isn’t just a night out. It’s a chance to see a piece of music history performed in a space that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. If you’re looking for a winter escape that doesn’t require a car or a long drive, this might be your answer.
Check the bus schedule. Grab a friend. And let the theater do the rest.
