Combined crowds of commuters and fans create unique challenge for agency.
NJ Transit managed a heavy influx of both regular commuters and World Cup soccer fans Tuesday afternoon after a 3 p.m. match at MetLife Stadium.
The simultaneous travel of two distinct groups—seasonal New Jersey commuters and international soccer fans—tested the transit agency’s capacity and coordination during peak hours.
The 3 p.m. World Cup match at MetLife Stadium ended just as the evening rush hour began, increasing ridership and potential delays.
NJ Transit deployed additional service and personnel to handle the combined crowds, according to agency officials.
‘This is an unprecedented situation for us,’ said an NJ Transit spokesperson. ‘We are committed to getting everyone home safely.’
Impact: Hudson County commuters who use NJ Transit trains or buses may experience longer wait times or crowded conditions during this period.
What Happens Next: NJ Transit will continue to monitor demand and adjust schedules as needed, with additional updates expected throughout the week.
The agency’s performance during this test will inform future planning for major events at MetLife Stadium.
