Police recovered a loaded handgun, more than 5,000 bags of heroin, and thousands of dollars in cash from an apartment across the street from a public school on Friday night, officials said.
Authorities investigating drug sales on Martin Luther King Drive near Dwight Street arrested 32-year-old Troy Laforte, of Van Wagenen Street. Laforte was carrying 1,000 glassine bags of heroin and 64 vials of cocaine, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.
During a follow up investigation, police prepared a search warrant for an apartment on Dwight Street, directly across the Street from School 15, she said.
Police found 5,000 bags of heroin, a loaded handgun, and $11,000 in cash which authorities consider drug proceeds. John Jackson, 50, who lives inside the unit, was arrested, Morrill said.
arents at School 15 questioned their children’s safety in the neighborhood earlier this year when a 14 year old accidentally shot himself after dismissal. Sources said the gun may have been inside the school.
Laforte was charged with multiple drugs offenses, which included distribution with 1,000 feet of a school, resisting arrest, and conspiracy. Jackson was charged with drug and weapons offenses and conspiracy.
Later that night, police doing another drug investigation arrested 39-year-old Joseph Davino, of Newtown, on McAdoo Avenue near Stegman Street carrying a gun and cocain, Morrill said.
