Childhood friends remembered with names added to Hidden Casualties of War pavers.
Vietnam-era veterans and community members gathered at Pershing Field on May 25, 2026, for a Memorial Day event honoring Vietnam War casualties, including service members who died from illnesses after returning home.
The event, organized by Thomas Murphy, a local Vietnam-era veteran, personally honored childhood friends whose names were added to the Hidden Casualties of War pavers. This ceremony highlighted the lasting impact of the war on Jersey City families.
The names of John Whalen, Robert Postel, and Patrick Downes were placed into the pavers, joining Frances Dolan, whose name was added years earlier.
The pavers sit across from the Jersey City Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which also lists Michael Majeski, another friend killed during the Tet Offensive.
‘As a Vietnam Era Veteran, I was proud to attend the 2026 Memorial Day event, invited by my friend of 50 years, Thomas Murphy,’ said Joe Calamito, a local veteran and friend of the honorees.
Impact: The ceremony, which included playing Billy Joel’s ‘Goodbye Saigon’ and placing roses on memorials, served as a reminder of the enduring sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families in Hudson County.
What Happens Next: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, led by President John Stanton, who served as master of ceremonies, may hold future events to honor additional Hidden Casualties of War.
The event underscored the community’s commitment to remembering all who served, including those whose losses came years after their return.
