A new musical turns our daily hunt for a spot into art — and a little therapy.
There’s a certain rhythm to the hunt. You circle the block, windows down, eyeing every brake light. You spot a reverse light — gold. Then a delivery truck swoops in. You’re back to circling. If you’ve ever lived in Jersey City, you know that dance. And this summer, that dance is heading to one of the biggest stages in the world.
“Parking Spot,” a new musical comedy, is making its premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August. It’s a show about the daily struggle to find a spot in our fair city — the parallel parking acrobatics, the snow-shovel chair resignations, the quiet rage when a car sits for days in a tenant spot. And it’s getting serious buzz.
The show was written by local playwrights and grew out of a series of open-mic nights at a downtown bar where folks swapped parking horror stories like war tales. It’s brash, it’s funny, and it’s painfully true.
Why Edinburgh?
The Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world, drawing thousands of performers and hundreds of thousands of visitors each August. For a show about a very specific urban annoyance, this feels like a stretch — but the creators say that’s the point. Everyone, everywhere, has a parking story. Edinburgh’s own Old Town is a labyrinth of tight lanes and parking permits. The universal pain crosses the Atlantic.
The show’s producer, Maria DiStefano, said in a recent interview that they wanted to “take something that unites us all — the daily grind of just trying to get home — and put it on stage, with tap dancing.”
The local angle
For Hudson County residents, this isn’t just an arts story. It’s a badge of honor. We’ve lived it. You’ve texted your spouse, “Is the car still there?” You’ve kept a folding chair in your trunk for snow season. You’ve watched a visitor park a non-resident car for two weeks in front of your building.
Parking in Jersey City has only grown tighter. New apartment towers rise, and parking spots shrink in proportion. Street cleaning days turn into block-wide Tetris games. The musical gives voice to that shared frustration — and maybe a reason to laugh at it together.
What the creators say
“It’s not just about the spot itself,” said writer-director Sean O’Malley. “It’s about what the spot represents. Home. Security. A little slice of order in a chaotic city. We’re laughing with everyone, not at them.”
The cast is a mix of locals and professional actors, and rehearsals have featured actual Jersey City residents telling their stories through song. One number, “The Circle,” is a fast-paced patter song about the eternal loop around the block.
What’s next for the show
After the Fringe run, the producers hope to bring “Parking Spot” back home for a few off-Broadway or even Jersey City performances. There’s talk of a local premiere later this fall. If you can’t make it to Scotland, keep an eye on the show’s website for announcements.
