After months of planning, the merger of New Jersey City University and Kean University is now official.

For decades, the sign outside the school on West Side Avenue read New Jersey City University – NJCU. But this week, workers swapped it out for something new: Kean Jersey City.

The change isn’t just cosmetic. On Wednesday, the merger between NJCU and Union-based Kean University officially closed, making the Jersey City institution a campus of the larger state university. For students, faculty, and the surrounding neighborhood, it marks the end of one era and the beginning of another.

Let’s back up. Over the past several years, NJCU faced serious financial struggles. Enrollment had dropped, the budget was tight, and there were questions about whether the school could keep operating on its own. State officials stepped in, and the solution they landed on was a merger with Kean University, a larger and more financially stable school based in Union County.

That merger was approved by both schools’ boards earlier this year, and Wednesday was the official closing date. From now on, the Jersey City campus will be known as Kean Jersey City. Current students will still be able to complete their degrees, and the school will continue to offer classes and services on the West Side campus.

For Hudson County residents, this is more than just a name change. NJCU has been a anchor in the community for generations. It educated teachers, nurses, and business owners. It was a place where local kids – many of them first in their families to go to college – could get a degree without leaving the county. Now, those same students are part of the Kean network.

The merger brings some immediate benefits. Kean is larger and has more resources, which means the Jersey City campus could see more programs, better facilities, and financial stability. But there’s also a sense of loss. NJCU was Jersey City’s university, tied to the city’s identity in a way that a satellite campus might never be.

Sarah Komar, the Jersey City Times reporter who broke the story, wrote that the transition was official as of Wednesday. She noted that while the name is new, the mission remains the same: to serve students from Jersey City and beyond.

Kean University officials have said they plan to invest in the campus and keep it as a hub for higher education in Hudson County. Faculty and staff have been assured that jobs are secure, at least for now. And students have been told that their credits and degrees will be fully recognized.

So what’s next? Over the coming weeks, you’ll see more signage replaced, the website updated, and new branding rolled out. Classes will continue as scheduled. The school is hosting informational sessions for anyone who has questions about how the merger affects their enrollment, financial aid, or academic plans.

For now, it’s a moment to pause and reflect. A Jersey City institution has a new name and a new chapter. But the work – of educating students and lifting up the community – goes on.
