A Preply survey gives the Garden State a loudness score of 90.6 out of 100.
A new survey from language-learning platform Preply ranks New Jersey as the third loudest state in the United States, with a loudness score of 90.6 out of 100. The state trails only Louisiana and Florida.
For Hudson County residents, the ranking highlights how local settings like bars, restaurants, public transit, and malls contribute to a noisy environment. The study surveyed residents on behaviors such as loud phone speaker use and chewing, finding that New Jersey respondents rated their state second for how loudly residents talk.
New Jersey’s loudness score of 90.6 placed it 0.1 points behind second-ranked Florida.
Despite the statewide ranking, no New Jersey city appeared in Preply’s top ten loudest cities list.
Impact: The survey underscores the high volume of noise in common spaces across Hoboken and the rest of Hudson County, where public transit hubs and packed eateries are frequent.
What Happens Next: Residents seeking quieter alternatives can explore local restaurants with lower noise levels, scenic walking trails, and calm beaches in the region.
New Jersey’s reputation for being loud remains a point of pride for many, even as quieter options exist throughout the state.
