Madeline Gonzalez, a 24-year Wallace Elementary employee, was nominated by a fellow resident for her community commitment.
NBC anchor Hoda Kotb surprised Hoboken resident and Wallace Elementary School security guard Madeline Gonzalez with a three-day wellness retreat as part of her Joy 101 platform. Gonzalez was nominated by another Hoboken resident, Margarita Garcia, for her dedication to the school and community.
The recognition highlights the unsung heroes in Hudson County schools who often go above and beyond. Gonzalez’s decades of service and volunteer work have made a lasting impact on the Wallace Elementary community, and this surprise brings attention to the power of local appreciation.
Gonzalez has worked at Wallace Elementary School for over 24 years, according to her son Eddie Gonzalez. She is a mother of six and a grandmother to 13.
In addition to her job, Gonzalez frequently volunteers at sports and school programs and has been a coach and mentor over the years.
‘She’s a giver,’ said Eddie Gonzalez. ‘She makes everyone feel loved.’ He credits her ‘mom energy’ for why the Wallace community has embraced her, adding, ‘She doesn’t put herself first. She’s so deserving of this surprise.’
Impact: The surprise, captured by a film crew, brought joy to the school and shed light on the contributions of support staff in local education. Gonzalez will attend the Joy 101 Retreat in late September 2026 as Hoda Kotb’s guest.
