This bar known for live music is now serving smashburgers and family-friendly afternoons.

You walk past it on River Street, maybe heading to the PATH or grabbing coffee. The sign says “River Street Garage” and you think, another bar. But here’s the thing—it’s also one of the best lunch spots in Hoboken right now, and they’re making a mean grinder smashburger.

River Street Garage, at 80 River Street, has been a weekend go-to for live music and DJ sets for years. But this summer, the team behind it—the Light Group, which also runs Green Rock Tap + Grill, Texas Arizona, McSwiggan’s Pub, and The Waiting Room—decided to open the doors during the day for something new: family-friendly lunch.

Yes, family-friendly. In a bar. With a giant Jenga set and views of the Manhattan skyline.

What You’ll Find on the Menu

The star here is the RSG Grinder Smashburger. Two smashed patties, provolone cheese, and a homemade grinder mix that will make you forget about any fast-food burger you’ve had this year. It’s the kind of sandwich you think about the next day.

But the menu’s got more. Classic bar apps like fried pickles and honey teriyaki chicken wings. Shareable plates—nachos, sliders, massive plates of apps—that work for a big group or just you if you’re hungry enough.

And the drinks? The Personal Spiked Sun Cruiser Bucket is a 32-ounce Sun Cruiser with an extra vodka shot. Normally $15, but during happy hour it drops to $12. Happy hours run 5-10 PM Friday, 12-5 PM Saturday, and all day Sunday.

Why a Bar for Lunch?

Downtown Hoboken is packed with places to grab a drink after work. But lunch? That’s a different story. Many bars in the neighborhood don’t even open until 5 PM. River Street Garage starts serving at 11 AM on weekends, and on weekdays the doors open at 5 PM for dinner and drinks.

For commuters grabbing a bite before heading home. For parents who need a spot where kids can play Connect 4 (giant, by the way) while they eat. For anyone who wants a burger with a view.

It’s also got a patio—outdoor seating with skyline views that make any lunch feel like a mini-vacation. And yes, there’s live music during lunch hours on weekends.

What It Means for Hoboken

In a city where rents are high and the lunch scene can feel limited to pizza slices and salad chains, River Street Garage fills a gap. It gives families and workers a place that feels special—without the fancy price tag. It’s a bar that’s also a restaurant, a music venue, and a game room all in one.

For the Light Group, it’s a smart move. They already know Hoboken. They know what works. And turning one of their spots into a daytime destination might be the thing that makes River Street Garage stand out—even among its own siblings.

What People Are Saying

A representative for the bar said, “We wanted to offer something different for lunch in Hoboken—good food, fun atmosphere, and a place where everyone feels welcome.”

Regulars we spoke with agreed. One said the grinder smashburger is “the best burger I’ve had in town.” Another praised the happy hour deals: “$12 for a spiked bucket? You can’t beat that.”

What’s Next

River Street Garage is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 PM to 2 AM, Friday 5 PM to 3 AM, Saturday 11 AM to 3 AM, and Sunday 11 AM to 2 AM. The lunch hours on weekends are the big draw right now. Keep an eye on their Instagram @riverstreetgarage for specials and events.

If you’re in Hoboken and looking for a lunch that’s more than just a sandwich from a deli, this is it. The burgers are thick, the drinks are cold, and the view is free.
