Mother-daughter duo behind Korai Kitchen in Journal Square earns multiple James Beard nominations for their intimate dawat dinners.
Korai Kitchen, a hidden gem at 576 Summit Avenue in Jersey City’s Journal Square neighborhood, has become a James Beard Award-nominated dining destination. The restaurant, which operates as an intimate weekend dinner series, offers a unique taste of Bangladeshi home cooking.
For the local community, Korai Kitchen represents a celebration of cultural heritage and culinary excellence. It brings recognition to Jersey City’s diverse food scene and provides residents with an opportunity to experience authentic Bangladeshi cuisine through its limited-capacity dinners.
The dinner series costs $95 per person and features about eight courses that change regularly, with no two menus ever the same. The experience is BYOB, and takeout and delivery are available throughout the week.
The kitchen is led by 67-year-old Nur-E Gulshan Rahman, who started Korai Kitchen at 61 without formal culinary training. She cooks entirely by intuition, using recipes passed down over 50 years. Her daughter, Nur-E Farhana Rahman, manages the front-of-house.
‘Rice is the center of all of our dishes,’ the duo explains, adding that guests should pace themselves to enjoy the full experience.
Impact: Residents and visitors alike can enjoy a meal that highlights Bangladeshi concepts like dawat, or gathering and feasting. The menu emphasizes fish, lentils, and vegetable dishes, with about 90% of the food naturally gluten-free.
What Happens Next: To experience Korai Kitchen, diners must secure a reservation through Resy for one of the limited-capacity weekend dinners. The restaurant also offers takeout and delivery options during the week.
As Korai Kitchen continues to draw acclaim, it remains a proud showcase of Jersey City’s rich cultural tapestry and a must-visit for food enthusiasts.
