City Council unanimously votes to move forward with historic cobblestone road rehabilitation.
Hoboken’s City Council unanimously approved a resolution on July 8 to begin rehabilitating Castle Point Terrace, a historic yellow-brick cobblestone road that has deteriorated significantly over the past decade.
The road, originally built in the early 1900s and part of the Castle Point Historic District, is in poor condition due to unrepaired utility work and pavement patches. The $200,000 contract with Arterial LLC will fund preliminary engineering plans, aiming to restore the street’s historic character.
The Castle Point Terrace Historic Rehabilitation Project was first proposed in 2018, but progress stalled for years as the road’s condition worsened.
The resolution awards a $200,000 professional services contract to Montclair-based Arterial LLC to prepare preliminary engineering plans.
“This project has been a long time coming, and the road has suffered too much neglect,” said a city official during the council meeting.
Impact: The road’s deterioration has affected residents and the historic neighborhood, with some sections completely covered by pavement patches. The restoration aims to preserve the street’s unique yellow brick and cobblestone appearance.
What Happens Next: Arterial LLC will work on engineering plans through the end of the summer. The timeline for actual reconstruction has not yet been set.
