JERSEY CITY — Despite some rain and overcast skies, city residents turned out in large numbers on Saturday for the Hudson County Improvement Authority’s (HCIA) Earth Day celebration.

The event kicked off at 10 a.m. with the Annual Earth Day 5K along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway at Liberty State Park.

Afterwards, the festivities continued with the Earth Day Kid’s Kingdom and Fair starting at 11 a.m. The festival featured plenty of activities and entertainment for kids such as face painting, and arts and crafts.

There was live entertainment as well from a number of performers including Michael & the Rockness Monsters, and the Field Station Dinosaurs.

The Early Morning singers — children from the Learning Community Charter School taught by their music teacher Meera Jaffrey — also performed.

The festival showcased a variety of informational booths on environmentally educational resources for residents.

The city’s office of innovation provided information on Jersey City’s sewer system, and what residents can do to alleviate the system on rainy days such as today when excess water causes it to fill up and spill into the Hudson and Hackensack rivers.
