We’ve already established that, at least before he met his current wife, George Clooney wasn’t thinking too far ahead.

“I don’t expect to ever get married again or have children,” a then 47-year-old and once-divorced Clooney told Britain’s Sunday People in 2008. “I am never at home and every woman gets sick of it…If I was them, I would never put up with me for long—and they don’t.”

Of course, that was years before he was swept off his feet by Amal Clooney, an internationally renowned human rights attorney who’s 17 years his junior.

Then again, even in 2015, eight months after they were married, George didn’t really have designs on daddyhood.

“I haven’t really,” the Oscar winner told Charlie Rose when the CBS This Morning host asked if he was thinking about having children. “I’ve thought about it I suppose, but I haven’t really—it hasn’t been high on my list, uh, I’ve been asked a lot lately because I’ve gotten married and I’m doing a movie with kids in it. You should see how creative the way they ask me.”

Just over two years later, at the age of 56, George Clooney is now the father of newborn twins, son Alexander and daughter Ella.

Now, of course it’s perfectly fine that George changed his mind—or rather, his perspective altered, once he met the woman whom he could see having a family with. Such is life. One day you’re not ready for something and the next…you’re as ready as you’re ever going to be.

And George is hardly alone. Rather, he’s in rich company among fellow male stars who, if they didn’t outright dismiss the prospect of having children one day, didn’t become fathers for the first time until they were further along on life’s path.

Behold, Clooney and seven more famous dads who didn’t try fatherhood on for size until after 50—only to find the perfect fit.
