A two-day event on July 10-11 will bring soccer, live music, and local business specials to The Heights.
Picture this: It’s a warm July evening, and Central Avenue is alive. A giant LED screen glows with a World Cup quarterfinal match. Kids are bouncing in a play area nearby. The smell of food from local restaurants mixes with the beat of live music. That’s the scene the Central Avenue Special Improvement District (CASID) is hoping to create on July 10 and 11.
The organization announced a two-day FIFA World Cup celebration that aims to bring the neighborhood together and showcase what makes The Heights special. This isn’t just about soccer — it’s about connection.
What’s happening
Friday, July 10, kicks off with The Corridor Crawl on Central, running from noon to 9 p.m. Restaurants, cafés, and businesses along the avenue will offer special menu items and host performances throughout the day. The big moment: a 3 p.m. World Cup quarterfinal match, which you can watch at participating spots while grabbing a bite.
Saturday, July 11, turns up the volume. From 3 p.m. to midnight, The World on Central Watch Party & Cultural Celebration takes over with a massive LED screen for live viewing. Expect cultural performances, live music, DJs, a beer garden, children’s activities, an art village, live mural painting, and other interactive experiences. It’s free and open to everyone.
How we got here
This is the third of four free World Cup celebration events in Jersey City, as the Hudson County View first reported. The idea is to use the global excitement of the World Cup to draw foot traffic to local businesses. For many small shops on Central Avenue, events like this can be a lifeline. A busy street means more customers, more visibility, and more community buzz.
The city has been working to revitalize commercial corridors like Central Avenue for years. The CASID, funded by local businesses and grants, organizes events that bring people in. This time, they’ve got backing from a $50,000 Choose New Jersey grant and partnerships with JCAST and the Boys & Girls Club of Hudson County.
What it means for Hudson County
For residents of Jersey City — especially those in The Heights — this is a chance to experience the World Cup without traveling far. Instead of watching alone at home, you can be part of a crowd, cheering together. It’s also a reminder that the neighborhood is a destination. The event is designed to attract visitors from across Jersey City and beyond, which could mean extra business for the shops and restaurants struggling through the post-pandemic recovery.
Parents, take note: there will be kids’ activities. That makes it easier to bring the whole family. And if you’re a commuter who usually rushes through, maybe this is the weekend you pause and explore what Central Avenue has to offer.
What people are saying
“The World Cup is about connection, culture, community, and Central Avenue embodies all three,” said CASID Executive Director Dayana De La Torre in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors for a weekend that celebrates fútbol, local business, and the incredible diversity of The Heights.”
She added: “We hope to create a memorable experience that reflects the vibrancy of our neighborhood.”
What comes next
Mark your calendar for July 10 and 11. No tickets are needed, but you might want to bring cash for food and drinks. If you own a business on Central Avenue and want to participate in the Corridor Crawl, reach out to CASID. Keep an eye on their social media for more details as the dates get closer.
This is a weekend designed for everyone — whether you live on the block or are visiting for the first time. Come for the soccer, stay for the community.
