Christian Miller ran from Uptown Hoboken to the Statue of Liberty Lookout, bypassing the PATH.
A Hoboken ultramarathon runner turned a five-hour training run into a 27-mile adventure from Uptown Hoboken to Lower Manhattan, proving that you don’t always need the PATH. Christian Miller, who moved to Hoboken just over a year ago, completed the trek last week, ending at the Statue of Liberty Lookout.
For many Hudson County residents, the PATH is a daily commute necessity, but Miller’s run highlights the unique fitness culture and scenic routes along the Hudson River. It also showcases how dedicated runners use the region’s geography for extraordinary challenges.
The run began around 5 PM in Uptown Hoboken, with Miller and his friend Doug Baker facing a steep hill in Fort Lee before crossing the George Washington Bridge and continuing south through Manhattan.
Miller said he had never visited One World Trade Center, so he decided to keep going downtown, eventually spotting the Statue of Liberty Lookout on Google Maps and making it his destination.
“I think that one of the best things that I love about running is really the places that you can go. You can create your own adventure,” Miller said. “It’s really just the best way to see a city on foot.”
Impact: The run took about five hours, offering Hudson River views, a sunset, the Manhattan skyline, and a nighttime view of the Statue of Liberty. It ended with two slices of pizza and a PATH ride back from Christopher Street.
What Happens Next: Miller, who documents his training on Instagram, is preparing for an upcoming backyard ultra-marathon in Maine, where runners complete a 4.2-mile loop repeatedly.
Miller’s adventure is a reminder of the active lifestyle embraced by many Hudson County residents and the unexpected ways they explore their surroundings.
