A torso found floating in the water in the vicinity of Gowanus Bay and Buttermilk Channel in New York City may be connected to Bergen County, according to news reports.

The body was reported at 11:21 a.m. Tuesday, New York police said.

The department’s harbor unit recovered the unidentified woman and transferred her remains to Pier 44. EMS responded and pronounced her deceased Tuesday. The New York City Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing, the police said Sunday.

Although news outlets have reported that the deceased woman is from Bergen County, the New York Police Department has yet to identify her publicly.

A police official familiar with the case said that the torso was not badly decomposed but that it appeared to have been dismembered. There was no upper body, no arms and no head, the official said.

The torso had a tattoo of a Sanskrit word that means either “lily” or “lilyann.”

According to WNBC, an NYPD dive team had been searching the water for more clues. The woman was initially discovered by a married couple, who asked to not be identified, who were taking a walk for leisure. The couple was sitting on the bench and staring towards the water in Red Hook Channel when the wifetold her husband that she thought she saw a body. They called 9-1-1 and police confirmed it was the body of a woman.
