A 26-year-old North Bergen man accused of refusing to pay his bill at a Union City bar was later arrested on charges he bit a responding police officer.
Rene A. Lopez, of the 8600 block of Fifth Avenue, was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and obstructing a government function in connection to the June 11 incident, a criminal complaint says.
Officers said Lopez appeared intoxicated when they arrived at the bar on a theft-of-services call. He refused to show police his identification and when they attempted to arrest him, he bit an officer’s forearm, the complaint says.
Lopez made his first appearance on the charges on June 12 in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. A detention hearing for Lopez is scheduled for June 22 before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale.
