For five long years, the family of Omar Monroig has been searching for the driver who killed him.

“It’s been very tough for all of us. I feel like he’s not getting the justice he deserved,” Omar’s brother Jorge told NBC 4 New York.

It was March 23, 2012 when a hit-and-run driver struck 42-year old Monroig at the corner of Tonnelle Avenue and 51st St in North Bergen.

Monroig died days later on April 1st; police say he was thrown 100 feet. The driver never stopped.

After the crash, police canvassed the area for weeks. Surveillance video indicated the driver was in a dark colored 2001 to 2004 Toyota Camry. Roadblocks were set up and fliers were handed out- but the driver was never found.

“They’ve exhausted all leads. I guess you would call it a cold case,” Jorge said.

Omar was a contractor for a cell site company and an amateur bodybuilder. He was also a husband and father, known for helping others.

“He’d give you the shirt off his back, if he could. He helped at a soup kitchen, he gave blood often,” Jorge said.

The last five years haven’t been easy for the Monroig family. Years of waiting, hiring private detectives, and following tips that didn’t pan out. But they still hold out hope that someone knows something about what happened that night.

“Please come forward and give Omar the justice he deserves.”

Jorge also had a message for the hit-and-run driver who didn’t stop that night.

“He’s a coward. Come forward and take responsibility for what you did.”

If you have information about Omar Monroig’s death, contact the North Bergen Police Department’s traffic division at 201-392-2135.
