A 38-year-old Paterson man has been accused of boarding a high school bus in North Bergen and assaulting a student.

Curtis J. Wheless, of Broadway, was arrested after the May 24 incident on a High Tech High School bus, and charged with assault and interfering with transportation, the criminal complaint says.

Wheless appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he allegedly struck the juvenile, who was a stranger to him, while other students were also present. Police said the student had visible signs of injury but refused medical attention, the complaint says.

The state moved to detain Wheless through the course of his prosecution when he made his first appearance on the charges in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City on Thursday via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.

The complaint does not provide the age of the student.
