STATEN ISLAND – A former Linden police officer convicted in a fatal drunken driving crash received the maximum sentence on Wednesday.

Pedro Abad was convicted last month on all charges brought against him in the 2015 wrong-way crash that killed Joseph Rodriguez and Frank Viggiano.

During the trial, an expert testified that Abad’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time of the crash.

Abad’s attorney had asked for a year behind bars, but the judge gave him the maximum of eight and one-third to 25 years in prison.

“He took him from us, and I will never have my brother back. It’s horrible and justice was served. He got what he deserved. I wish he could get more,” said Roseann Rodriguez, Joseph Rodriguez’s sister.

Abad’s attorney said he doesn’t expect his client to get out after eight and one-third years. He thinks Abad is likely to serve at least 16 years in prison.
